ah, lets say contemplative pace of 3025 action (myself included in this!). The old TROs are totally usable, no tweaks needed tho tech has exploded in the Jihad/Dark Ages era into a myriad of subsystems and optional rules which can change some of the core game experience a bit (all in all 'mechs are faster, more heavily armed and armored) in a way that can be alienating to a player who is used to the more. infantry), with the changes increasing the further you get from the core 'Mech experience: alot of time has been spent on altering Vehicles, Aerospace and infantry specific rules for instance, but it's still a case of "this rule has these numbers or this chart vs. Now, there are differences - there are a number of small edits that change how some things work or how some situations are adjudicated (partial cover has changed, physical attacks now key off of the piloting skills involved rather than a base TN, weapons have been tweaked vs. Same resolution mechanic, same turn sequence, same tracking of heat, armor, ammo, MP, etc. The miniatures seem to have become hard to find as well (although it looks like maybe I can order them directly from Ironwind metals, none of my usual online gaming stores stock them).ġ) How compatible/similar are the old rules and the new stuff?ģ) What new stuff, if any, is worth buying, given what I already own?Ĥ) Any other recommendations are much appreciated!ġ) There's a spin off ( Alpha Strike) which pushes the Battletech game into a more contemporary miniatures/wargaming direction but Catalyst still publishes for and supports Classic Battletech in all it's hexmap, record sheet keeping glory and for all intents and purposes it's the same game as the one you've got the rules for. Some of the technical readouts seem to be still available. I went looking to see where the game was at, and it seems like maybe Catalyst is still around? But the core rulebooks seem way out of print with outrageous prices from second hand sellers. I have the Classic Battletech boxed game with the really bad plastic minis, the "Classic Battletech total warfare" core rulebook, and a handful of technical readouts from that edition (3025, 3050 upgrade, 3058 upgrade, 3075). I'm looking to start playing with it, and while I'm sure I could just play the old editions and pretty much never need to buy anything, I'm a bit curious about the current state of the game and rules.Īs luck would have it, I actually did buy a few books back when it was Catalyst (and then FanPro? Vice versa?). I recently got a very large collection of Battletech stuff (from the original FASA run) including a ton of miniatures, and as far as I know most of the books and boxed sets that were released for it at the time.
